This 5-day course focuses on the development, prevention and treatment of psychological disorder. It weaves together theory, human development, assessment, case examples and treatment applications to reframe maladaptive behaviour in terms of strategies for self-protection. The course focuses on development from infancy to adulthood, emphasising the process of adaptation and developmental pathways that carry risk for psychopathology. The model used is the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of attachment and adaptation.

  • Moving baby: Thinking about trauma and risk to babies and very young 'looked after' children

    Date
    Friday 6 July

    Fee
    £110 (£88 if booked by 31st May)

    Venue
    Tavistock Centre, London

The conference will be relevant to Social Workers and their managers, members of Fostering and Adoption panels, early years’ professionals working in educational and care settings, eg Health Visitors, psychologists, psychiatrists, GP’s.

The impact of early trauma and the damage that can be caused by multiple placements, sudden transitions and losses, and a lack of a primary consistent/reliable carer, can be underestimated, and neuroscience research supports the worrying effects of early traumatic experiences of these babies. We hope to explore some of these questions:

    • How can we tell if a baby is traumatized?
    • What are the risk factors for pre-school age children?
    • Is ‘moving baby’ enough to limit the emotional/psychological damage to infants? What else do we need to offer?
    • How can close observation of babies and their interactions with carers support their developing relationship
    • How do we evaluate the impact of contact between babies and their birth parents?

  • A Thinking Space Special Event - Cultural Sensitivity and Forced Marriage: Exploring the Issues

    Venue
    Tavistock Centre, London

It is estimated that there are at least 5,000 to 8,000 cases of forced marriage in England every year. Many such marriages are of girls less than 18 years old and are associated with a wide range of psychological, family and developmental problems. But how do professionals in education, mental health, and children services respond to the needs of these young people and their families?

    Friday 22 June 2012

£110 (£88 per person for groups of 3 or more)

    Tavistock Centre, London

How do existing services find the resourcefulness to have new ideas in the current context?
How do teams come together to support each other in times of strife?
Does austerity and scarcity stimulate the need to be creative and find new ways of working and providing care?
