Online Supervision for Doctors

e-Supervision for Doctors at The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust

This service provides on-line supervision for doctors with management roles and who are working with complex issues relating to other professionals and/or working with challenging organisational situations.

People wishing to use this service might include:

-         Trust Medical Directors / Responsible Officers and those working alongside them

-         Doctors working for regulatory bodies and investigative agencies or others dealing with professional performance

-          Doctors doing casework where many agencies are involved, possibly involving disagreements or conflicts of interest

This list is not exhaustive - the service is open to any doctor seeking supervision

Complex casework and organisational situations often raise a great deal of anxiety, a sense of confusion, and a feeling of uncertainty about the best course of action. Line management systems may make it hard to find opportunities to reflect on these issues in a measured and dispassionate way.

Reflective online supervision allows the doctor/practitioner/manager to mull over the issues, take soundings and obtain a different perspective.

We are especially interested in helping with the kinds of problems that may lead you to think, for example:

“This complicated problem is bugging me and I don’t know where to turn”

“I need someone who is one step back from the action, to give me a new take on it”

“I wish I could talk to someone sooner rather than later: it might hit the fan”

“I want to be able to listen to myself talking this through”

“I think I’m doing the right thing according to the procedures, but I’m worried I might be missing something and I could get it wrong”

The service:

  • Tavistock and Portman senior staff, skilled and experienced in offering reflective supervision/consultation, offer 1-1 consultations.
  • The emphasis is on providing reflective space, listening and findings ways of sharing understanding about the situation/case that enables problems to be solved and confidence to be gained in following through a plan.
  • The supervision service will make use of Skype and similar technologies, and/or the telephone.

How to contact us:

How the service works:

  •  We offer an initial discussion on Skype or telephone with a senior doctor in the Tavistock  to establish  what is being asked for and how we can respond. Following this, we arrange an initial consultation with a member of our staff team.
  • The staff team consists of senior professionals from all our disciplines: all are experienced in providing case and organisationally focused supervision.
  • Doctors can choose a one-off consultation and/or a series of 5 or 10 consultations/supervisions  to be taken as arranged with the Tavistock supervisor

Confidentiality:  This is a confidential service. i.e. information is not shared with others etc. All staff are bound by the usual legislation to protect and safeguard.
