Both the Tavistock Centre and the Portman Clinic have a long and valued tradition of offering training to mental health professionals from overseas. We offer creative professional development to professionals who are able to take sabbatical leave in the UK from overseas.

There are three options of attachment to a training course:

  • Become a full-time course member

  • Clinical Associates

A Clinical Associate would already hold a professional qualification, e.g., as a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. We can offer the opportunity for you to complete a lengthy clinical training course on a flexible basis, or add specialist training to an existing professional qualification. The agreement to offer an applicant a clinical associate programme is subject to CV and interview, through which suitability, previous experience, and fluency in English would be assessed. International students generally pay double the fee for EU and UK students, for whom additional funding from the Higher Education Funding council can be claimed. Clinical associates may undertake supervised clinical work, provided they are suitably qualified and experienced professionals. The programme can be undertaken on a full or part-time basis. You will need to write to the relevant Tavistock directorate: Adult, Adolescent, CAMHS or the Portman Clinic. If in doubt, please write to Trudy Klauber, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, in the first instance: tklauber@tavi-port.org

Programme Associates

This part-time attachment provides access to lectures, seminars and workshops but excludes clinical work. It is suitable for professionals whose clinical qualifications are not recognised in the UK but who are interested in furthering their understanding of our approaches to work in mental health. A programme of teaching events from one or more of our postgraduate courses can be created according to interests and experience as well as time available to the associate. The programme is best taken for one academic year, starting in October, or for six months at least. One-term programmes can be designed. Fees for programme associates are linked to the programme/course from which most modules are chosen. This is usually around £2,500 for EEA students and £5,000 for non-EEA nationals.

New UK Immigration Rules from February 2010

New UK points-based immigration arrangements require us to issue a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) to all non-EEA students who have been offerred a place on a course. This CAS will enable students to apply for a visa or extend existing visas.

Applicants are advised to contact the Department of Education and Training for further advice and guidance about issuing of a CAS. A CAS will not be given to any applicant without the applicant having first been accepted.

Fees and Funding

Fees for Non-EEA students undertaking degree programmes are higher than those for UK/EEA students. Fee details for all courses can be found in fees and funding. are at the bottom of the page. For more fee related information see  financial support. Your classification for fees will be determined in accordance with Home Office guidelines.

Students who are classed as 'home' for fee purposes

UK nationals, European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and others with full permission to work in the UK, or otherwise residing in the UK under special categories approved by the UK Government, may apply for our part-time courses. For further advice follow the link to the UKCISA website which gives further guidance.

Distance and E-Learning

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has a growing distance and e-learning portfolio, making it easier for our students to access our training off-campus at a location of their choice. To find our more visit Where can I study.

Visitors’ Programmes

We are able to arrange visitors’ programmes for groups and individuals for single days or up to one or two weeks. These are usually arranged by specific clinical department managers. They may include attendance at Trust lectures or seminars and some specific training events designed to meet the needs of groups. You can make an enquiry with one of our clinical departments whose contact details are below. There will be a fee for visitors that can be quoted once an initial programme is identified.

Background

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is a licensed Tier 4 Sponsor, via the UK Border Agency for overseas students. This means that prospective students can apply for a Student visa on the basis of an offer of a place to study at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. This offer is confirmed by the issuing of a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) form.

As a Tier 4 Sponsor Agency, we have a range of obligations to ensure that students are not applying for student visas under false pretences to gain entry to the UK for purposes other than study (i.e. to work). This is an increasing problem, with agents in some foreign countries assisting people who wish to gain entry to the UK for economic reasons, to obtain student visas even though they do not intend to complete the course of study.

We have a responsibility to only issue Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) once we are satisfied that the student intends, and is able, to follow the course of study they are being offered. There are certain questions and checks that the UK Border Agency recommends Sponsoring institutions carry out at the time of acceptance. This may include questions about your career history, family background, as well as other personal and financial circumstances. You will also undergo ID and passport checks.

If a student who has been issued a CAS fails to enrol on the course, the Home Office will be notified immediately.
