International Students

Both the Tavistock Centre and the Portman Clinic have a long and valued tradition of offering training to mental health professionals from overseas. We offer creative professional development to professionals who are able to come to London for the period of study.

There are three options: -

1.      Become a full-time course member

This option is available to overseas applicants (EEA and non-EEA) who are interested in one of our one, two, three or four year programmes.  Some of these are professional development programmes, such as the PG Dip/MA in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies (M7), The PG Dip/MA in Infant Mental Health, or the PG Certificate/Diploma in Applied Systemic Theory. Other options are for already qualified professionals to apply for one of our clinical training programmes.  The most popular for overseas applicants are:

  • M80 Clinical Training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (some applicants will need to complete M7 first).

  • M6 Clinical Training in Systemic Psychotherapy (some applicants will need to complete D4 first).

  • MA in Foundations of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (adults). D59 is a course which offers further opportunities to study intercultural psychoanalytic psychotherapy and to complete the required supervised clinical work to apply for registration with the British Psychoanalytic Council.

  • M1 Advanced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy training (some candidates will need to complete D58/59 first).

2.  Clinical Associates

A Clinical Associate would already hold a professional qualification, e.g., as a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. We can offer the opportunity for you to complete a lengthy clinical training course on a flexible basis, or add specialist training to an existing professional qualification. The agreement to offer an applicant a clinical associate programme is subject to CV listing  qualifications and (clinical and other) work experience to date; there will also be an  interview.  This enables us to assess applicants’ personal suitability, level of qualification and experience to date as well as fluency in English.

International students (non EEA) generally pay double the fee for EEA and UK students (to cover additional income available to the Trust for UK students). Clinical associates may undertake supervised clinical work in one of our Directorates provided they are suitably qualified and experienced professionals. The programme can be undertaken on a full or part-time basis. You will need to write to the relevant Tavistock Directorate: Adult (Shirley Hiscock Borghetti), Adolescent (Director), CAMHS (Associate Dean CAMHS) or the Portman Clinic (Director, Stan Ruszczynski).  If in doubt, please write to Malcolm Allen, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, in the first instance: mallen@tavi-port.ac.uk .

3. Programme Associates

A Programme Associate-ship provides access to an agreed programme of study including lectures, seminars and workshops. The programme associate-ship excludes clinical work. It is suitable for professionals whose clinical qualifications are not recognised in the UK but who are interested in furthering their understanding of our approaches.

Visitors’ Programmees

We are able to arrange visitors’ programmes for groups and individuals for single days or up to one or two weeks. These are usually arranged by specific clinical department managers. They may include attendance at Trust lectures or seminars and some specific training events designed to meet the needs of groups. You can make an enquiry with one of our clinical departments. There will be a fee for visitors that can be quoted once an initial programme is identified.

Distance and E-Learning

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has a growing distance and e-learning portfolio, making it easier for our students to access our training off-campus at a location of their choice. To find our more visit the e-tavi page.

Fees and Funding

Fees for Non-EEA students undertaking degree programmes are higher than those for UK/EEA students. Fee details for all courses can be found in fees and funding. For more fee related information see financial support. Your classification for fees will be determined in accordance with Home Office guidelines.
