Journal Cancellations - 2010/2011
You can see a list of journals that are under consideration for cancellation here, or download it here
Why is the Library cancelling journals?
Along with the rest of the Trust the Library has to make significant savings, for the past two years we have protected the journals budget as much as we could and made cuts from other areas of the Library budget - however journals account for our greatest expenditure so inevitably cuts have to be made here too. This year we have to make savings of approximately £17,000 so some hard decisions have to be made, and we would like you to have your say in which journals we keep, and which ones we cancel.
What criteria have we used?
We have drawn up a list of titles by looking closely at the usage statistics for our online journals for 2008, 2009 and the first quarter of 2011. Using these figures we have calculated a very basic cost-per-download for all of our subscriptions (by dividing the cost of an annual subscription by the number of downloaded articles), this is a very crude calculation, but does give us an idea as to how well used our journals are.
We also considered which journals have alternative online access, for example if the journal is also available as part of an online collection in addition to our subscription copy. Access via these collections is, in most cases, restricted (ie the most recent 6 months - 1 year may be embargoed).
Where we don't have access to online versions we have considered the cost of the annual subscription, and if we feel that a particular journal title is underused we attach a sign-in sheet to each issue as it is received, we can then see how many people have consulted a particular journal title.
How you can help
Click here to see a list of titles which cost the Library £15.00 or more per downloaded article last year, and also some of the journals which we are unable to access online (either the cost/licencing conditions are prohibitive, or they are only available as print copies).
We would find it very helpful if you could let us know which journals you think we should cancel, and which we should keep. It would be helpful if you could give reasons for your selections, but this isn't necessary if you would rather not. You can put your suggestions in an email, or download the attached form and send it to holiver@tavi-port.org
Will there still be any access to the cancelled titles?
Print copies will still be held in the Library, and we will continue to have online access to the years that we subscribed to (eg up to 2010) for almost all titles. Many of the journals will continue to be available via other online collections, although there is usually an embargo for the current year, check the One-Stop-Shop for Journals for access. If you need to get hold of articles published after 2010 we can order them via our inter-library loan service, this is very quick and most articles are emailed to you within 24 hours of when you placed your order. We are also offering free inter-library loans for articles published in the 2011 issues of any of the titles that we cancel.
New subscriptions
We regularly receive requests to subscribe to new journals, for the past two years this hasn't been possible, however we want to be sure that the journal collection stays relevant to the clinical, academic and research work of the Trust so if we can save more than our target by cancelling little-used titles we may be able to subscribe to new titles. Some of the titles recently suggested for purchase are below - we will circulate more information about these and other potential titles later in the summer.
