Postgraduate Medical Education

Postgraduate Medical Education is a rapidly evolving field. The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust organises, on behalf of the London Deanery, three Specialty Training programmes in Psychiatry, and a whole range of CPD activities.

All doctors at Specialist Registrar grade follow a comprehensive curriculum as laid down by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and approved by PMETB for these specialties. They are employed as doctors in the Trust and on rotation to training placements in partner Trusts. There is a competitive application process for appointments, organised by the London Deanery. In all instances, they work as full members of multidisciplinary teams and are encouraged to participate in a variety of other courses within the Trust.

The three Specialty Training programmes in Psychiatry are:

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (M2)
Psychotherapy (linked with M1)
Forensic Psychotherapy (P4)

There are also 2 posts at ST2 /3 level in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (M2c)

PGME also offer a wide range of CPD activities and courses for General Practitioners and medically qualified consultants, with a general or specialist interest in mental health or in understanding their clinical or organisational work from a psychodynamic or systemic perspective.

PGME is particularly interested in developing relevant CPD opportunities, at different levels of advancement and intensity, for Psychiatrists and for General Practitioners. We provide consultation and supervision for individuals or groups of doctors at any stage of their professional life, and aim to develop outreach which responds to their specialist interests and professional needs. Doctors are welcome to come and discuss their individual needs.
