In this section:

The University of East London (UEL)

The University of East London and the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust have been formally linked as collaborative partners since 1990, and there exist strong teaching links between teaching staff employed in the University and the Trust in the areas of Psychoanalytic Studies, Social Work and Systemic and Narrative Research. Teaching and research links exist with the Tavistock through the Family Therapy and Systemic Research Centre.

The majority of the Tavistock Trust’s courses which are validated by UEL are located within the School of Law and Social Sciences which was formed in August 2011 when the School of Law and a part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences were combined. This School spans a wide range of interdisciplinary programmes and research interests, drawing upon law, criminology and the social sciences, including social policy, to create a distinct and vibrant academic and intellectual Identity. The School has a commitment to critical, contemporary higher education from a cross-cultural and international perspective. It has over 100 staff and 2,500 on-campus students as well as nearly 50 PhD students and it also houses four research centres. The School is based in two locations: the Law School at Duncan House, High Street, Stratford, London E15 2JB; and the Social Sciences division at Docklands Campus, 4-6 University Way, London E16 2RD.

The Trust’s courses in Social Work are located within the School of Education and Communities which was also formed in August 2011 when the School of Education and a part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Social Work discipline, were combined. This School offers a varied and innovative range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including highly rated teacher training programmes and degrees and qualifications for other professional careers in education, early childhood, youth, community and social work. It has over 110 staff and 2600 on-campus students and more than 12 PhD/research degree students. The School houses two research centres. The School is based at the Stratford Campus of UEL.

In 1999-2000 the Trust was given devolved powers in quality assurance and enhancement. Devolved responsibility covers: the consideration of Review and Enhancement reports (through the Tavistock Quality Committee; consideration of programme modifications for approved programmes; nomination of external examiners; nomination of external advisers for Academic Review; initial approval of new programme proposals for further consideration by the UEL Vice-Chancellor’s Group; and the chairing of assessment boards by selected staff who have received the UEL training. It was agreed in 2009 that the Trust be given devolved powers in respect of the administrative management of postgraduate research degrees. In 2010, the University agreed to devolve the processing of research ethics applications for ‘taught’ professional doctorates and Masters dissertations to the Trust. In both areas, a Trust staff member (the Chair of the respective Trust committee) sits on the university’s Research Degrees and Research Ethics Committee.

The University of Essex

The first Tavistock course validation by the University took place in 1999. Currently there are three Tavistock – Essex courses: two Educational Psychology Professional Doctorates and an MA in The Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy which is also delivered at the Northern School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy by staff employed by the Trust but under the umbrella of the Tavistock - Essex agreement.

In 2010 the University gave full devolved powers to the Trust to manage applications for research ethics clearance in relation to the two validated Professional Doctorates. The Tavistock’s provision is linked to the University’s School of Health and Human Sciences.
