The Work of the Unit

In this section:

Academic Governance and Quality Assurance

Academic Governance is the phrase the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust uses to describe the development of policies and regulations that govern key areas within the Trust’s training provision. Academic Quality Assurance describes the responsibility for key academic issues such as course approvals and ensuring standards in learning and teaching.

The Academic Governance & Quality Assurance Unit at the Trust works with colleagues in Quality Assurance at each University Partner to ensure good cohesion of policies relating to students and their experience on a Tavistock-University course. The long-standing links with our University Partners mean that some Quality Assurance powers are fully devolved to the Trust. For more information on this, please see Our University Partners.

What We Do

The Unit works with course teams in the development and review of the courses we offer. Courses are written and reviewed according to frameworks written and approved by the Trust or one of our Partners as well as those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency in the Quality Code. If a course is University validated, the Unit help the course team to prepare the necessary documentation for the meetings and Validation Events held by the University.

Assessment is essential to each course and the Unit works with the Course Teams in the design stage of the course to ensure compliance with our Assessment Policies as well as being responsible for the convening of Assessment Boards and the recording and publishing of results and certificates.

Annually, our University Partners ask us to submit a review of each course outlining how it has done in the last year and highlighting areas for enhancement. These reviews form an essential process in the improvement of our educational provision. As part of the review, the Tavistock submits a Tavistock-UEL Review and Enhancement Process Overview Report to the University of East London.

The Trust has its own Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee which meets 11 times each year and is Chaired by one the Associate Deans. The Committee enjoys representation from the University of East London and the University of Essex.

The Unit also plays a key role in other areas such as Academic Misconduct; Academic Appeals; Student Feedback and Research Ethics.
