This course is the oldest and longest running course in this field in the UK, and aims to assist those working with refugee people to enhance their understanding and skills in the context of their own experience. Using systemic and psychodynamic approaches, it creates a facilitative space within which to examine the complexities of the refugee experience from a holistic, systemic and more rounded perspective, including therapeutic, clinical, theoretical, organisational, social and political levels of context.

Who is this course for?

Refugee and asylum seeking people face particular difficulties that require special attention. In addition, those who work with them experience exceptional pressures. All this creates a complicated combination of difficulties, anxieties and pressures that this course aims to reflect on and explore within reducing or simplifying this complexity. The course is multidisciplinary and is open to all professional and non-professional workers who are engaged in (or want to) work with refugee people in different capacities (from voluntary workers and social workers to managers, mental health workers and psychotherapists).

Content/Teaching components

The course offers the opportunity to:

  • Explore the social, cultural and political context and its relevance for working with refugee people
  • Explore the importance of self and relational reflexivity to our work with refugee people; that is reflecting on ourselves as workers, and eliciting feedback from clients about the relationship they have with us and the service we provide
  • Explore theoretical issues pertaining to the refugee experience and the dynamics involved in helping refugee people
  • Develop practical skills in working with refugee people
  • Exchange ideas and share feelings about work experience
  • Present and discuss specific work issues for consultation.
