Who is this course for?
The course is designed for qualified and experienced social workers in all settings, with opportunities to specialise in practice, leaderships and management or education and training. Normally you should have been qualified for at least two years before entering the programme. We welcome applications from all service sectors and from independent practitioners.
The course maintains the Tavistock Centre tradition of providing experientially led post-qualifying training for social workers and applies this to contemporary social work and policy concerns.
Aims
To enhance each individual’s capacity to understand and manage complex case dynamics, emotionally testing practice and management situations, to adapt creatively to rapidly changing policy environments, and develop the advanced capabilities necessary to respond professionally within reconfigured modes of service delivery, as well as to take leadership roles.
Our staff group are highly experienced practitioners and teachers, most of whom continue to undertake direct practice in social work, CAMHS or other therapeutic settings. We have well established and committed service user involvement with the programme
Content/Teaching components
This is a flexible, modular programme drawing on a range of teaching methods, including detailed critical reflection on current practice, observations of young children and individuals in their care contexts, understanding current policy processes and their impact on practitioners and managers, and theory seminar that support and illuminate the rest of the programme.
There are opportunities to specialise in practice (with a requirement to undertake some supervised therapeutically oriented work in the Tavistock or in your own setting), in leadership and management through detailed reflection on current experiences and conflicts, or the educator role via seminars that enable learning about supervision, mentoring or formal training.
The programme is delivered in three two term blocks, starting in October 2012, allowing completion of the MA in two years. There are step-off points with intermediate awards after terms 2 and 4 if this suits the individual.
The course is rigorously underpinned by the principles governing GSCC Post-Qualifying programmes in social work, and we are in the process of seeking endorsement from the College for Social Work
Closing date
July 2012. Late applications may be accepted.
