Social Work and Emotional Well-being (Post-qualifying) (ref. D60M)
Enables social work professionals to pursue advanced theorisation and research in clinical practice with different client groups and/or in leadership and management, and/or in education and training.
Who is this course for?
The course maintains the Tavistock Centre tradition of providing post-qualifying training for social workers and applies this to contemporary social work and policy concerns.
Aims
To enhance individual capacity to manage change, adapt creatively to rapidly changing policy environments, develop the advanced competences necessary to respond professionally within reconfigured modes of service delivery, and to take leadership roles.
Content/Teaching components
This is a flexible, modular programme drawing on a range of teaching methods, including detailed discussion of practice, management or practice education.
Theoretical seminars/lectures introduce and apply psychodynamic theory to:
- Social work
- Organisations
- Social policy and research methods
- Training and education
- Consultation
- Supervision
The course is flexible and part-time.
Students may choose to register for 1, 2 or 3 years of study for various postgraduate qualifications (Certificate, Diploma and MA) and post-qualifying Awards (Specialist level in Year 2 and Advanced level in Year 3).

Time commitment
- You will be expected to attend at the Tavistock Centre on Tuesday (year 1 and 2) or Thursday (year 3).
- You may need to attend at other times (year 3) if following the clinical route.
Entry requirement
You need at least two years post-qualifying work experience in social work, a recognised social work qualification (or equivalent), and usually a good honours degree (or equivalent).
