Strategic Leadership and Management (ref. M26)
This programme has a different orientation to other management qualifications (such as an MBA), particularly in the experiential nature of the course and its focus on group relations and the observation of organisations.
Who is this course for?
- This course is designed for leaders and managers in social services, health services, education services and voluntary sector projects.
- Managers who want to extend their leadership and managerial skills and to develop managerial expertise to complement their professional training.
Students completing the course can expect to have a significant career in public services or organisations associated with the public services.

Aims
- Facilitate the advanced study of organisations, their leadership/management and the changing external context in which they operate.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of key areas of leadership and management.
- Enhance managers’ capacity to recognise the relationship between ideas and practices, with particular attention to improving outcomes for service users.
- Help managers reflect on and learn from prior experience and combine this with new knowledge to apply to new situations.
- Develop a sophisticated understanding of leadership and management within the context of psycho systems and socio-political perspective.
- Provide a programme of professional and academic study for social work managers towards a post qualifying level - Higher Specialist and Advanced Level Awards.

Entry requirement
An appropriate professional qualification relevant to their chosen career. Social worker managers should have a C.Q.S.W. or Dip. SW. Equivalent professional qualifications will be expected from other disciplines in a health, education or voluntary sector organisation.
At least three years practice experience since professional qualification.
A relevant First degree, degree equivalent or evidence of other post-registration education/experience.
To be in full-time or part-time posts in which they have management responsibilities.

Professional accreditation
An MA is normally completed within three years.
However, students may choose to register for 1, 2 or 3 years to study for various Postgraduate awards (Certificate, Diploma, MA).
Social work managers may simultaneously register for post-qualifying professional awards at either Higher Specialist (Postgraduate Diploma) or Advanced (M) Levels.
Time commitment
Part-time, delivered in a block format of two days per month (Wednesdays and Thursdays - 9.30am - 5.30 pm), three terms per academic year.
Students will also be expected to participate in a five-day group relations event held in December.
