Starting at the Tavistock and Portman
Our students choose the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust because of our reputation for excellence in multidisciplinary education and training in mental health and social care. 2,000 students are training each year on one of our 50 courses and 50 continuing professional development (CPD) programmes.
Are your courses right for me?
The focus of all our training is to improve skills and knowledge in managing complex human relations. Our courses have been developed to meet the needs of those who are working or intend to work in the mental health field, or those whose work contains a mental health dimension. Our aim is to provide a rich learning resource for a wide range of professionals.
What happens on a typical day?
Training typically takes place in small groups, rarely larger than fifteen. Many courses include seminars consisting of four to five students who meet weekly with a tutor throughout the academic year. Here students are able to make presentations to the group at least twice each term. Presentations are based on the varied life and work experience of the student, making this a highly valued and interesting part of your learning and development.

Students undertaking a clinical training do supervised clinical work either at the Tavistock Centre and Portman Clinic or in another institution. Clinical trainees are responsible to a senior member of staff for all the clinical work they do in connection with their training. More information can be found on the relevant course page.
Who are your courses aimed at?
Courses and events are aimed at professionals interested in working more effectively with their clients, students or patients in education, social care, management, mental health and child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) of all kinds. We have created new and expanding opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD) and applied life-long learning for individuals, teams and services. We have strong links with our university partners which support our accredited postgraduate and professional doctorate teaching. We are always ready to discuss the training needs of individuals, teams or organisations.
Where will I study?
Most of our courses take place at the Tavistock Centre and Portman Clinic in Swiss Cottage, North London. However, we do deliver courses at other centres around the UK and internationally. We also offer a wide variety of CPD and other training activities to small or large groups in organisations which means we can come to you.Follow @TaviTraining
