Reading List and Study Pack Guidelines for Tutors

In this section:

Reading List and Study Pack Guidelines for Tutors

In order that course reading lists are accurate and that the library can ensure that students have best possible access to their course readings we have devised our Reading List and Study Pack Policy, which can be downloaded from this page.

We ask that Organising Tutors make sure that all tutors and visiting tutors are aware of this policy,

How do students access their Reading Lists and Study Packs?

Reading Lists and Study Packs are uploaded onto Moodle, students will need a Shibboleth account in order to log into Moodle.  New students need to complete the online Library Pre-Regstration Tutorial in order to receive their Shibboleth account details, information about this is sent to students in the Summer as part of the enrolment procedure.

What is the difference between a Study Pack and a Reading List?

Electronic Study Packs are collections of up to 20 digitized book chapters and journal articles which can be downloaded directly from the reading list.

Benefits to students include:

  • access to papers that are hard to get hold of, or not available online through any of our other online collections
  • no additional logins
  • no need to navigate through publishers websites to find the correct paper

Study packs may also contain links to additional papers that are available through our online journal collections or electronic book collections, these will also require students to log in with their Shibboleth accounts.

More information can be found in the Study Pack Application form which can be downloaded from this page.

Reading lists do not include links to digitized book chapters and journal articles that can be downloaded directly from the list.  However they may contain links to papers that are available through online collections that we subscribe to, this is an add-on service though and cannot be guaranteed, particularly if lists are not received by the given deadline.

If you would like a demonstration of how Reading Lists and Study Packs work on Moodle please watch the short presentation below

How can students get hold of papers that are not available online?

The Library tries to ensure that there is at least one copy of every book that is included on a reading list.  If there is likely to be a lot of demand for a particular title we will usually purchase multiple copies, and one of these will be allocated as a Reference Only copy ensuring that there will always be a copy in the Library for students to consult.

Please indicate if any of the texts are Essential Reading as these will need to be added to the Reference Only collection – Only items marked as Essential Reading will be added to the Reference Collection.

Students are expected plan their reading in advance, and to make use of the reservation facility on Tapcat. the Library's online catalogue to place holds on books that are on loan to other members.

There are two photocopiers in the Library which are available to students, and they may use these to photocopy their seminar readings.  All copying on these machines must comply with the Trust's copyright licence.

Students based at Associate Sites can request postal loans and photocopies from the Library, more information can be found at: http://www.tavistockandportman.ac.uk/library/associate-sites-services
